How to play Solitaire

Learn your first Klondike game: recognize the piles, make legal moves, uncover cards and build the foundations.

You do not need to learn every strategy before starting. Open the board and use Draw 1 for an uncomplicated first game. The rules below apply to the Klondike version played on Solitaire All Day.

Find the four areas

  • Tableau: seven columns where you rearrange cards and uncover hidden ones.
  • Stock: the face-down pile you draw from when you need another card.
  • Waste: drawn cards; only the top card can move.
  • Foundations: four suit piles, built from Ace through King. Move all 52 cards there to win.

Make your first moves

Look for an exposed Ace that can start a foundation. In the tableau, place a card on one rank higher in the opposite color: a red Six goes on a black Seven. You can move a correctly ordered face-up run together. An empty column accepts a King or a run beginning with one.

Moving cards off a face-down tableau card turns it over automatically. If no useful tableau move is available, draw from the stock. Recycle the waste when the stock empties.

Use the controls comfortably

Drag a card or stack to a destination, or tap to select it and then tap a highlighted pile. A tap can make an unambiguous move automatically. Double-click or double-tap a card to send it to a foundation when legal. Keyboard users can use Tab and Enter; Ctrl/⌘ Z undoes a move.

Undo is there for exploring. Restart replays the same deal, while New Game changes it. Smart Hint may suggest a verified winning-path move, but a limited search can have no answer. Take your time; hiding the timer in Settings does not change the rules.
